What is HYROX?
HYROX is a fitness racing event that combines running and functional workout stations. The race format consists of 1km runs followed by 1 functional workout station, repeated 8 times, totaling 8km of running. This format is consistent across the world, meaning you can compete with global leaderboards and the best of the best get invited to the World Championships at the end of each season.
HYROX offers four divisions to cater to different fitness levels and preferences: Open, Pro, Doubles, and Team Relay. HYROX races are held across the world, and so far Valkyrie HQ members have traveled as far as Stockholm competing!
HYROX Training: Targeted for Success
HYROX demands a well-rounded training approach. While people may choose to focus on the lifting elements, HYROX is primarily a running race. You need to be able to run 1km intervals without it overly straining your body.
To excel, focus on these core movements:
- Running: Build aerobic capacity and running efficiency for HYROX’s running intervals.
- Lifting: Increase strength and power for sled pushes, pulls, and sandbag lunges.
- Bodyweight Exercises: Master burpees, wall balls, and rowing for the HYROX course.
Preparing for your first HYROX
Let’s be real – signing up for HYROX is the easy part. The real work? That’s in the grind leading up to race day. Having coached athletes through this beast of a competition, I’ve seen what separates the finishers from those who aren’t race ready.
First, get brutally honest with yourself about where you’re starting from. Sure, everyone wants to crush their first HYROX, but you need to build up to it. It’s not something you can just show up and smash without some training beforehand. Break down that massive goal into smaller wins you can actually hit.
Structure is your friend here. Map out your training weeks – know exactly what you’re doing and when you’re doing it. This isn’t the time for winging it. The coaches here at Valkyrie HQ are on hand to give you that guidance on mapping your training and nutrition out to get the most from HYROX.
Don’t try to be a lone wolf. Whether it’s a training buddy who’ll drag you to those 6 AM sessions or family who’ll understand why you’re meal prepping on Sundays, you need people in your corner. They’ll keep you honest when motivation dips (and it will).
Keep tabs on your progress – not just times and weights, but how you’re feeling. Those small improvements add up, and there’s nothing like looking back at where you started to light a fire under you. This includes your recovery days, whether that’s active or passive.
